My company name is pronounced wrong

Short answer

Write to us through the contact form with the name as written, how it should sound, your site's language and the address of a post that has it. Where we can, we add the name by hand to the pronunciation list for that language, and new posts then read it the right way.

Posts that already have audio keep it. After we confirm the fix, edit the post, untick Keep current audio and save, which costs the post's characters again.

01Why a company name goes wrong

A voice reads written characters, so an invented spelling, an acronym or a name from another language is a guess. Readerr prepares the text before the voice reads it and picks a reading for names it recognises. It does this automatically, and it keeps the reading it chose. A name gets its pronunciation once, and the same reading is used in every later post.

That is the catch. When the first reading is wrong, it repeats in every post that has the name until we correct it. The good news is that one correction fixes the name for all your later posts. For other words and numbers, see a word or number was read wrong.

02What to send us about a name

To correct a name, send us the name, how it should sound and a post that has it. Four details make the correction fast:

  • The name exactly as written: with the same capitals and spacing as in your posts, for example "Xylo Ltd".
  • How it should sound: write it in plain letters the way you would say it, for example "ZY-low", or "say each letter" for an acronym such as "JMK".
  • The language of your site: it is the Article language in Settings, then Readerr. The pronunciation list is kept per language, so say which language the fix is for.
  • The address of a post that has the name: and a time in the audio, such as 0:35, where you hear it wrong.

Say if the name appears in more than one form, for example with and without "Ltd", and give the reading for each form.

The contact form is the only way to send this. It has no topic for pronunciation, so choose A question. A word or number was read wrong shows the form step by step.

03What we do with it

Where we can, we add the name by hand to the pronunciation list for your site's language. An entry holds only the text, how to read it and the language. It has no link to your account or your posts. Entries we add by hand take priority over the ones the automatic preparation proposes. We do not give a time for the change.

The list is shared by everyone who publishes in that language, as our terms describe. A correction for your name changes how that name is read in every post in that language. There are no separate entries for a single customer, so the reading must work for every post that has the name.

New posts that contain the name use the corrected reading without anything for you to do.

04Get new audio for posts that already have audio

Your published posts keep their old audio after the fix, because audio is not made again when the list changes. Do this only after we tell you the reading is corrected. Otherwise you pay for new audio that still has the old reading.

To get the right name in an old post, you need new audio, which costs the post's characters again. Make a small edit to the post, untick Keep current audio in the Readerr audio panel and save. There is no Regenerate button. The steps are in get the corrected audio for a published post. Changing the voice of the post also makes new audio.

It is worth doing for a few important posts, such as your most listened ones. The rest can stay as they are, and the choice is yours. Do not write the name phonetically in your text, because readers would see the odd spelling.
